Mister Stelvio supports vzw Een Hart voor ALS!

We are very glad that Thomas De Gendt accepted to be ambassador for the 2018 Ortler Mountain Challenge.
Succeeding to Gella Vandecaveye (judo) and Niels Albert (cyclocross) in 2016 and Edward Theuns(cycling) in 2017, Thomas will be an inspiration for all participants.

Thomas was born on Nov, 6 1986 in St Niklaas. He joined the Lotto-Soudal cycling team in 2015.

His name will forever be linked to the Stelvio after he won the queen stage to the top in the Giro on May, 26 2012. Never before a Belgian cyclist had won this legendary climb. It was Tomas’ first participation in the Giro d’Italia, and he finished it with a 3rd place.

Thomas is well known for his appetite for attack and competitive spirit. For more than 10 years he is also a regular in Sulden. The small Ortler village is an ideal starting place for altitude training.  Hotel manager Philipp Reinstadtler has known Thomas for years and helped him to find the best and most challenging cycling roads. He is delighted that  Thomas accepted the OMC ambassadorship

Why is the Ortler Mountain Challenge important for Thomas?

Thomas De Gendt:” Without any doubt, the Stelvio has a personal mythical meaning to me. Winning this stage in my first Giro, and finishing that Giro on the podium is a giant milestone in your carreer. I know the region very well because I train a lot from Sulden am Ortler. The relationship with Philipp Reinstadler makes me feel at home.

I learned about ALS through teammate André Greipel who joined a few charity projects because of his mothers illness. I have witnessed  the impact of the disease on the patient and on the people around him. That is why I wanted to commit myself to this project.”

One first advice from Mister Stelvio : do not underestimate the job!
